8. Simplify Complex Ideas

The smartest people I know can explain quantum physics to a 5th grader.

When I worked at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center the VP of IT said of the PMO… “You bring clarity”.  That is a HUGE part of what we do as project managers. This is just amplified in our role as a project manager on an agile project. If projects weren’t complex by their very nature, they wouldn’t need project managers.

They NEED you to bring clarity.

Who else is in the position to see how the development is going, and how the business is going. What the corporation needs and what the project needs. YOU are in the unique position to be the translator between all of these interested parties.

It is your responsibility to help your organization by simplifying complex ideas.

This article really resonates with me. The concept is very logical, but in the world of IT projects, simplified communicaton is rare. As a PM, it is common for meetings to be bogged down in the weeds, leaving very few with a clear understanding of what needs to be done and what the priorities are.

I am realizing that I need to be part of the solution to make communication more straight forward so that all involved can understand their roles and can move toward the same shared objectives more efficiently.
